Chapter 24
1. Christ is Risen Indeed 1 - 13.
(Luk 24:1) Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared.
V1. Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
The day after the Sabbath, Sunday, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and Salome (see Mark 16:1) came with the spices very early in the morning to the tomb where Jesus' body was buried.
(Luk 24:2) They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb,
V2. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
When they arrived they found that the stone that had sealed the entrance to the tomb had been rolled back. It is often wondered how these three women thought that they could have moved the stone themselves to gain entrance.
(Luk 24:3) but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
V3. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
So they went in but did not find the body of Jesus there.
(Luk 24:4) While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.
V4. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
As they tried to work out amongst themselves what could of become of Jesus' body two men appeared at their side clothed in brilliant garments. Although Luke does not record that they were angels we know from John's Gospel that they were
(John 20:12).
(Luk 24:5) The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
V5. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?
As they with fear bowed their faces to the ground these men asked them a astonishing question. Why were they looking among the dead for someone who was alive ?
(Luk 24:6) He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
(Luk 24:7) that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."
V6 - 7. He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again' "
They did not wait for an answer but immediately went on to say that Jesus Christ is risen! They reminded these women who had been with Jesus in Galilee how He had told that this would happen (Matthew 17: 22 - 23).
(Luk 24:8) Then the women remembered his words,
V8. And they remembered His words.
Their memories being stirred by these two men they remembered the words that Jesus had spoken to them.
(Luk 24:9) and when they returned from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
(Luk 24:10) Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.
V9 - 10. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
As soon as the angels had finished speaking these women ran from the tomb to find the eleven apostles to tell them all that they had seen and heard.
(Luk 24:11) But these words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them.
V11. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
None of the apostles believed a word that these women told them. After the trauma of the crucifixion they were full of fear and unbelief.
(Luk 24:12) But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth; then he went home, wondering what had happened.
V12. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
In spite of his unbelief Peter ran to the tomb, with John, and bending down looked into
the tomb and saw the empty grave clothes that Joseph of Aramathia had dressed Jesus in lying on the side. He went away wondering what had happened to the body of Jesus.
2. Jesus Draws Near 13 - 27.
(Luk 24:13) Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
V13. Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.
On the same day as the Resurrection two of Jesus' disciples home to Emmaus which was seven miles from Jerusalem.
(Luk 24:14) They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened.
(Luk 24:15) While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them
V14 - 15. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
As they journeyed they went over all that had happened in the last few days trying to reason why these things should have happened when suddenly Jesus drew near and walked with them. But they did not know Him because He had concealed this from them. In Mark 16: 12 it says that He appeared to them in another form.
(Luk 24:16) (but their eyes were kept from recognizing him).
(Luk 24:17) Then he said to them, "What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?" And they stood still, looking sad.
V17. And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?"
Jesus asked them what it was that they talking about that made them so sad.
(Luk 24:18) Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have happened there in these days?"
V18. Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?"
Cleopas one of the two turned to Him in amazement asking Him He was the only person who had been in Jerusalem for the Passover that was ignorant of all that had happened there in the last few days.
(Luk 24:19) He said to them, "What things?" "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene," they replied, "a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people;
V19. And He said to them, "What things?" So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
Pretending to be ignorant of these things Jesus asks about them. So they began to unburdened their hearts to Him telling Him about Jesus of Nazareth who had proved Himself to be a mighty prophet of God by the powerful miracles He had done and by His powerful teaching before all the people.
(Luk 24:20) and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
V20. and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.
They related to Him how the chief priest and rulers had handed Him over to be condemned to death by crucifixion.
(Luk 24:21) But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.
V21. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
They voiced their disappointment because they had believed that He was the promised Messiah that would come and deliver Israel from their enemies and that this was the third day since these things happened.
(Luk 24:22) Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
V22. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.
Then that very morning a group of women who belonged to the same group of followers who had gone to the tomb early in the morning had come back with an amazing story.
(Luk 24:23) and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
(Luk 24:24) Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him."
V23 - 24. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see."
They did not find the body in the tomb but had seen two angels who told them that Jesus was alive. Some of the men who were with them and heard this ran to the tomb and found that it was exactly as the women had said but they saw no sign of the risen Christ.
(Luk 24:25) So he said to them, "You foolish people — how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
V25. Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
Having patiently heard all that they had to say, Jesus called them fools not in a disparaging way, in scorn, but because of their lack of understanding of the Scriptures and His teaching concerning the Messiah, the Christ.
(Luk 24:26) Wasn't it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?"
V26. Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?"
It was quite clearly revealed in the Scriptures by the prophets that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer death on the Christ and then to rise again.
(Luk 24:27) Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures.
V27. And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Starting at Genesis He went through the books of Moses and all the Prophets explaining to them all that was said in the Scriptures concerning Himself (Genesis 3:15, Psalm 22:1, Psalm 16:10).
3. Eyes Opened 28 - 35.
(Luk 24:28) So they approached the village where they were going. He acted as though he wanted to go farther,
V28. Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.
As they approach Emmaus it looked as if Jesus was intending to go further. He was in fact waiting for an invitation from them to go home with them.
(Luk 24:29) but they urged him, "Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done." So he went in to stay with them.
V29. But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them.
But they compelled Him (the Arabic version says "they held Him by forced) the word constrained would suggest that they caught hold Him and drew their way. As they do so they invited him to come and spend the evening with them because it was quite late.
At their invitation Jesus went with them. Jesus never forces Himself upon anyone He always waits for an invitation to enter peoples lives and to intervene in their needs and problems although He will always prod.
(Luk 24:30) When he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
V30. Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
While He sat at the table with them Jesus took the bread and asked the blessing upon it and then broke it and gave it to them. This was usually the custom in Jewish homes for the head of the house to do, but here the guest, Jesus, performed it which in itself was significant to them.
(Luk 24:31) At this point their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Then he vanished out of their sight.
V31. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
As He did so their understanding was opened and they knew that it was their Lord and Saviour and immediately He became invisible to them.
(Luk 24:32) They said to each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us?"
V32. And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?"
As they thought upon what had happened they remembered that when Jesus was talking to them on their journey that their hearts were set on fire while He explained the Scriptures to them.
(Luk 24:33) So they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and those with them gathered together
(Luk 24:34) and saying, "The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon!"
(Luk 24:35) Then they told what had happened on the road, and how they recognized him when he broke the bread.
V33 - 35. So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.
They did not hesitate any longer but set out to go back to Jerusalem and found the eleven apostles and others with them gathered together. They told them of how Jesus had talk with them on the road and how He had broken bread with them. Those present responded by telling them that the "Lord is risen indeed" and that He had appeared to Simon. It is not recorded how or where that Jesus appeared to Peter on his own. Paul confirms in that this was so "and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve" 1 Corinthians 15:5.
4. Jesus Appears to All of His Disciples 36 - 43.
(Luk 24:36) While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
V36. Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, "Peace to you."
Just as they were saying these things Jesus Himself was suddenly standing amongst the and gave them the Jewish salutation "Shalom", "Peace to you" .
(Luk 24:37) But they were startled and terrified, thinking they saw a ghost.
V37. But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.
Although they had received reports from a number of witnesses that they had seen the risen Lord they thought He was a ghost and were terrified. It would be right to suppose that the two from Emmaus, Peter and those women who had already seen and spoken to the Lord were not afraid.
(Luk 24:38) Then he said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
V38. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Jesus asks them why they are so disturbed and are full of doubt and fear in their hearts.
(Luk 24:39) Look at my hands and my feet; it's me! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones like you see I have."
V39. See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Feel and handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.
He invites them or challenges them to look at the nail scars in His hands and feet and to come and touch Him they will see then that He is not a spirit, or ghost, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones.
(Luk 24:40) When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
V40. When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
As He said this He showed them His hands and feet.
(Luk 24:41) And while they still could not believe it (because of their joy) and were amazed, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
V41. But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, "Have you any food here?"
They still stood there in disbelief although filled joy and wonder. Jesus asks them if they had anything to eat.
(Luk 24:42) So they gave him a piece of broiled fish,
(Luk 24:43) and he took it and ate it in front of them.
V42 - 43. So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence.
They gave Him a roasted fish and honeycomb and He ate before them to show that proof that He was really risen from the dead and not a spirit.
5. Jesus Opens His Disciples Understanding 44 - 49.
(Luk 24:44) Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled."
V44. Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."
He reminded them that these were the things that He had told them about before His death on the cross. That all these things had to be fulfilled that were written about Him in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.
(Luk 24:45) Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,
V45. And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Then He thoroughly opened their minds and gave them an understanding of the Scriptures so that they recognized their meaning.
(Luk 24:46) and said to them, "Thus it stands written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day,
V46. Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
He told them that it was written concerning the Messiah, the Christ, that it was essential for Him to suffer and then to rise from the dead on the third day (Isaiah 53: 3, Psalm 16:10).
(Luk 24:47) and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
(Luk 24:48) You are witnesses of these things.
V47 - 48. and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.
That it was also written that the Gospel message of repentance and forgiveness of sins through His atoning death and resurrection would be preached to all people through the world, starting at Jerusalem (Psalm 67:2, Isaiah 11:10). That His disciples are witnesses of all these truths.
(Luk 24:49) And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
V49. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
He tells them to stay in Jerusalem until He sends the Holy Spirit just as His Father had promised (Joel 2: 28). The Holy Spirit would empower them to be witnesses to Him (Acts 1:8).
5. The Ascension 500 - 53.
(Luk 24:50) Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
V50. And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
Jesus then took His disciples as far as Bethany, not into the village but just outside, where He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
(Luk 24:51) Now during the blessing he departed and was taken up into heaven.
V51. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.
While He was blessing them He was separated from them and taken up into heaven (Acts 1:9).
(Luk 24:52) So they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
V52. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
As He ascended up into heaven to return to His Father the disciples worshiped Him and then returned to Jerusalem.
(Luk 24:53) and were continually in the temple courts blessing God.
V53. and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.
In obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ they remained in Jerusalem continually in the temple praising and blessing God.
